Children don’t “decide” to be difficult, as a lifestyle choice. I recently saw a 5 year old throwing a stereotypical tantrum in a toy aisle the other day. I’m sure the father carrying him out of the store felt embarrassed. Personally I wanted to comfort them both. I happened to know that the boy had been horribly abused by his mentally ill mother literally day and night for at least two years. It was my noise complaints that got social services involved and caused the poor little guy’s mother to be institutionalized. I was indirectly traumatized by just the disembodied sound of what was going on. It’s no wonder the child has the occasional meltdown.
