Socrates spent all his effort on philosophy and became extremely poor, but managed to get by financially because he was fantastically quick witted. It’s hard to think of a famous philosopher who would make a great financial role model,except Thales, and he was also a scientist. You can’t blame people for being disappointed by academic philosophy though. Many full profs are just as unhappy with their means as you are even though they have more money. The standard solution seems to be to marry a lawyer, or promising medical student.
