I agree with you that sometimes the best solution is simply to let motivated people find loopholes in the system. It’s also true that most Americans don’t mentally classify entering the country by sneaking across the southern border as a criminal act. It’s not dissimilar to the the way we feel about speeding. It’s also my opinion that so far illegal immigration has brought net-benefits to the United States as a whole, even if it also has costs. However, it’s unacceptable to have a permanent demographic of people living outside the restrictions and protections of the law. America needs a legislative solution that finds a balance between, border control, economic needs, and humanitarian concerns. Now that these issues have come to a head, we should solve them while we are still focused on them as a nation. If we don’t, we simply leave the door open to future administrations suddenly changing immigration enforcement policies for political reasons.
